Barbiturates are a class of drugs derived from barbituric acid that act as central nervous system (CNS) depressants. Types of Barbiturates
1. By Duration of Action:
Ultra-Short-Acting:
Onset: Seconds to minutes; Duration: 15–30 minutes.
Used for anesthesia induction.
Examples: Thiopental, Methohexital.
Short-Acting:
Onset: 15–30 minutes; Duration: 3–4 hours.
Used as sedatives or pre-anesthetic agents.

Intermediate-Acting:
Onset: 30–60 minutes; Duration: 6–8 hours.
Historically used for anxiety or insomnia.
Example: Amobarbital.
Long-Acting:
Onset: 1 hour; Duration: 12–24 hours.
Primarily used for epilepsy.
Example: Phenobarbital.
2. Medical Formulation
Oral (tablets, capsules, solutions).
Injectable (intravenous or intramuscular).
Suppositories (less common).

Effects

Usage
1. Medical Use

Occasionally used when other treatments fail (rare due to risks).
Euthanasia and Physician-Assisted Suicide:
In some countries or contexts, barbiturates are used in end-of-life care.
2. Non-Medical Use
Misused recreationally for their sedative and euphoric effects.
Commonly combined with alcohol or opioids, increasing overdose risks.
